Time to change your clock and your smoke alarm batteries – As our nation moves back to Standard Time beginning this weekend, the U.S. Fire Administration encourages you to mark the occasion as a time to test your home smoke alarms and replace the batteries if more than one year old.

Drug Company to bring more than 700 jobs – A Florida pharmaceuticals company will bring its new operations center to Lexington County – investing $313 million and creating more than 700 jobs. Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp. will locate a new manufacturing campus and offices in the county’s Saxe Gotha Industrial Park near Cayce, where only giant Amazon.com recently opened. “This is a big step for our firm and will help us meet increased demand, expand our market share and develop our pipeline of products” said Lou Kennedy, CEO of Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp. The new facility is not set to open until 2013. But Lexington County will see immediate benefits from the project due to the demand for construction jobs as the buildings are erected. The company will receive training support through the state’s Ready SC program, which is already gearing up for jobs the company will require.

Pella to shutter West Columbia plant, 147 jobs – West Columbia window and door maker Pella will close its plant here, the company told employees. The Iowa based Pella Corp. said in a press release Friday that it would offer incentives to employees who take early retirement or voluntarily leave at other plants in Iowa, Illinois and Oregon but would close the West Columbia plant completely in December, leaving in question the fate of the 147 jobs here.

Many Lexington County cities, towns holding elections – Forty two candidates are running for 22 sets on seven town councils in municipal elections Tuesday. Voters will go to the polls to elect two mayors and 20 council members on Nov. 8. The elections are only open to registered voters who live in the towns of Batesburg-Leesville, Irmo, Lexington, Pelion, Pine Ridge, Springdale, and West Columbia.
