2011 Elections- Voters elected new mayors in Irmo and West Columbia and removed restrictions on Sunday beer and wine sales in Tuesday’s municipal elections. Joe Owens former City Councilman and utilities director won a hotly contested battle for the West Columbia’s top job over Bobby Horton by a vote of 814 to 606. The new mayor will be sworn in at a special city council meeting on Monday. In Irmo, Councilman Hardy King won a four man race to replace John Gibbons as mayor. He defeated two other council members and a newcomer to become the town’s first new mayor in 20 years. King received 534 votes, Kathy Condon received 393, Barry Walker 364 and newcomer Suzanne Gooch 13 votes.
