The new year is looking promising –Bet on banner year in 2012, leaders say – Is the recession over? Maybe not quite yet. But a promising future is in store for us in 2012. We only need to build on 2011’s successes, many state and local leaders told the Chronicle. Lexington County had two huge investments or more than $200 million.
• The opening of Amazon’s distribution facility near Cayce and up to 2,000 full time jobs by 2013.
• The announcement of Nephron Pharmaceuticals planned manufacturing plant and 700 jobs.
“We have to keep those jobs coming,” said Lexington County Council’s economic development committee chair Bill Banning. At the end of 2011, the county was negotiating with 12 to 15 companies that ant to locate here, Banning said. That could bode well for us in 2012.
The Town of Lexington’s long awaited road improvement plan begins this year. Mayor Randy Halfacre said the town was “encouraged” by a Dept. of Transportation announcement that the project could be bid out in late January or early February. It had been delayed last year due to financial troubles at the DOT. Development should be primed with a new $60 million sewer plant opening in Cayce this summer. But Lexington, Cayce and Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission will need to come to a mutual understanding on rates.
Lexington closes 2011 with victory. Lexington’s wrestling team closed the calendar year with a major victory. The Wildcats defeated Fort Mill 34-23 in the final round of the Wildcat Duals Saturday at Lexington High School. Lexington rushed out to a 31-3 lead before Fort Mill was able to rally. The Wildcats forfeited two matches late, but were able to hold on for the win.
Roland prepares for final high school football game – Lexington receiver Shaq Roland hit the practice field Sunday as he prepares for his final prep football game. Roland will take part in the 2012 Under Armour All-American game played Thursday, Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL. Roland, who was named Mr. Football for the state of South Carolina, is ranked 45th in the ESPNU Top 150 and is the ninth best receiving prospect. He is listed as the 15th best receiver according to Rivals. com.
