Crooked 5K for Meals on Wheels September 4 – Don’t miss this annual event at Crooked Creek Park on September 4, rain or shine. The course runs throughout the park and includes walking paths, grass, tree lines, and is the home of the Lake Murray Cross Country Invitational Run. This race is part of the Tour De Columbia. All proceeds from this race will benefit the Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission Meals on Wheels program. Fees are $20 for runners and $10 for walkers, but after August 16 all race fees increase $10. The 1-mile Kids’ Fun Run is free. Open Registration: July 1 – September 5. However, participants must register by August 15 to ensure a race t-shirt. Tyler Wins Lifetime Achievement Award - The South Carolina Association of School Administrators honored Lexington High Principal Creig Tyler with the prestigious William B. Harley Lifetime Achievement Award. An educator for 40 years, Tyler has served students across the state as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. Under his leadership since 2002, the students and employees of Lexington High have received countless awards including the Palmetto’s Finest Award, Palmetto Gold Award, and National Blue Ribbon School. Tyler received the William B. Harley Award and $1,500 prize at SCASA’s Summer Leadership Institute.
 
Sheriff to Hold Book Sale for United Way – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a book sale between 8 am and 6 pm this Friday, September 3 at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington. All books will be sold for $1 each, with all proceeds benefiting the United Way Campaign. Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts encourages citizens to participate in the book sale. Citizens can bring books that they wish to donate for the book sale to the front desk at the county Law Enforcement Complex. Citizens who have questions concerning the book sale can contact Sandy Paavel at her office at the Sheriff’s Department at 803-785-2535. The book sale is part of an ongoing campaign by the Sheriff’s Department and Lexington County government to raise money for the United Way.
 
Malori Crapps Memorial Ride September 11 – The Malori Crapps Memorial Ride is scheduled for September 11. Shepeard’s Community Blood Center will be there from 1-6. Last year’s ride purchased playground equipment for Malori’s church and this year it will provide funds for purchasing equipment for a Batesburg park where Malori played. Registration is 11 – 12:30 at The Dog House at 101 Haygood Avenue Lexington. Last bike out at 1. Stops are The Dam Bar and Grill, The Wild Hare, Carolina Wings White Knoll, Charlie’s Sports Break, Ventures Bar and Grill, and Anthony’s. Ending location is at the Dog House. The Full Throttle Band will be on hand playing the music. There will be door prizes, raffles, Best/Worst Hand, Hairy chest contest, kid’s activities, food, and more. Lake Murray Baptist Hosts Rita Gumm – Lake Murray Baptist Church will host a concert September 12 at 6 PM featuring Rita Gumm, “The First Lady of the Carolina Opry” in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Archie Jordan, Two Time Grammy Award Nominee, Singer/Songwriter. Both Rita and Archie, not only will inspire you with their music, but their testimonies are full of how God had worked and blessed in their lives. Rita has appeared on National Television appearances: TBN, The 700 Club, and The Old Time Gospel Hour. Rita’s husband, Eric, a comedian/singer also at “The Carolina Opry” plans to be a part of the concert. Archie Jordan wrote hit songs recorded by Ronnie Milsap such as “What a Difference You’ve Made in My Life”, “It Was Almost Like a Song”, and “Let’s Take the Long Way Around the World”. The concert is free, and a love offering will be received. The church is located at 1001 Hwy. 378 West, 4 miles west of Lexington.
