Freedom Ride set for September 11 – HOGWYLD and Lake Murray Abate will be holding the 11th Annual Freedom Ride September 11 at 11a.m. The ride will be leaving the Chapin Bi-Lo parking lot at noon. There will be a police escort to the SC State House with special speakers at the Statehouse steps. After the ride everyone is invited to meet up again at Ray’s on Highway 76 in Ballentine for food and entertainment. Lake Icons reflect on Dockside History – Former LMN Editor-In-Chief Ollie Moye digs into the history of Dockside Restaurant at Lake Murray Marina, which has just been demolished by owner Ben Arnold, a Columbia developer who has announced plans for a 216 unit complex at the 12 acre site, including a new restaurant that will be open to the public, (see accompanying new article on this project elsewhere). As this writer gazed at a large area adjacent to the shoreline of Lake Murray near Ballentine the other day, jagged large chunks of crushed building materials that once was a popular restaurant seemed amazingly alive, covering this visible ugliness with layers of fun and laughter and memories of literally thousands of lake lovers who have gathered at this same spot for more than a half a century. This marina and restaurant are a big part of Lake Murray’s history that I hate to see changed; but it’s in the process of being changed and nothing can be done about it.”
